While all of our tours include some education, those with a thirst for more knowledge should consider our Natural History Tours. Paddling with a field biologist with decades of experience in these waters gives you a better understanding of the ecology of Penobscot Bay and the surrounding areas.
What makes Breakwater Kayak special? Our owner and lead guide Mark DiGirolamo, who has decades of paddling and guiding experience and is very interested in sharing his knowledge of the natural world: birds, marine mammals, the intertidal zone, island ecology. And he’s one of those teachers whose enthusiasm for the subject is infectious.
Join Mark to explore the biological diversity and island jewels of Penobscot and Muscongus Bays. On this tour, nature will be our focus as we use the sea kayak as our vehicle to discover the diverse marine and bird life in and around the nutrient-rich waters of the Maine coast.
We will meet at Breakwater Kayak in Snow Marine Park on the Rockland waterfront (unless other arrangements are made) and from here, leave for our destination for the day. Your tour will unfold as we choose our path based on the richness of the wildlife we experience and our curiosity to discover and observe what we find.
We may see seals on ledges, osprey flying overhead, and eagles soaring. Bird migrations may treat us to waves of warblers or sights of shorebirds along mudflats and floating rockweed. Opportunities to see various birds and plants abound. We will stop on an island for a delicious picnic lunch and to explore the fascinating inter-tidal zone and plants of the shoreline. This is a wonderful trip for anyone, especially those interested in the natural history of the Maine coast.
