We love the Breakwater. It’s not just that it’s in our name. The Rockland Breakwater and the lighthouse at its end are unique to our town and a timeless symbol of resilience and American ingenuity. Join us as we explore it from the water and let us fill you in on what’s special about it.
This is a great trip for beginners as well as those with a few hours of exploring time. This tour begins at Snow Marine Park on the Rockland waterfront (near the public landing) and will give you a feeling of the excitement of sea kayaking. We will follow the shoreline, paddling past numerous recreational boats, schooners, and working lobster boats. We will see the active commercial fish pier, Coast Guard station, and state ferry terminal. We will head to more open water and look for osprey, seabirds, and seals as we paddle towards the Rockland breakwater and lighthouse.
If conditions are good, we will paddle along the breakwater to the lighthouse for photo opportunities. Then, we will land near the Samoset Resort at the base of the breakwater, which will give us a chance to stretch our legs and explore the breakwater itself. When paddling back to port, we will pass by working boat yards and lobster pounds as we enjoy a beautiful view of the city and the surrounding Camden Hills.
